Oshawa Transit Commission

Previous Oshawa Railways VehiclesMission Statement: "To provide a safe, efficient and cost-effective public transit service which responds to the needs of thecitizens of Oshawa for travel within the city and for connections to adjacent municipalities and to regional and inter-regional public transit services."

The Oshawa Transit Commission is a board of the City of Oshawa which oversees the overall operation of Oshawa Transit.

The Commission operates 43 buses on 12 regular routes, a GO Transit shuttle service and a Community bus route. Full service is provided Monday through Saturday, with a reduced service operating on Sundays and holidays. The transit service operates on a grid system which covers 96% of the city and offers full transfer privileges wherever routes intersect. It's a system that puts a bus stop within a 450 metre walk of 95 percent of homes in Oshawa.

Passenger carryings for 1996 on Oshawa Transit was 3.3 million rides which produced a revenue/cost ratio of 52%.

In addition to passenger service, Oshawa Transit has a fully-equipped maintenance facility which allows all required maintenance to be performed in-house, including engine and transmission rebuilds and a full body and paint facility. To offset costs, Oshawa Transit currently has contracts with the Oshawa Public Utilities Commission for the provision of maintenance on its fleet of 63 trucks and trailers, with GO Transit for the storage, fueling, cleaning and minor maintenance of 20 of its buses, and with Handi Transit for the storage, fueling, cleaning and full maintenance of 7 of its buses.

People who take transit are kinder to the environment. Putting stuff in the Blue Box is something most people do willingly. Composting your own wet garbage is something more and more people are doing weekly.

Getting on a bus is in the same category: it's kinder to the environment. A national U.S. study showed a bus with as few as seven passengers is more energy efficient and pollutes less than a private car for the average work trip. It also takes up less road space. And less parking space.

Another key figure: cut your driving in half and your car could spill two tonnes less of harmful emissions.
